a good source of material on track laying is the many tutorials out there
do a google on Railworks track laying, there are tons of videos and tutorials out there

I join different types of scale rail without difficulty if I join the ends. If you attempt to make a switch or crossing with different types of track, the switch or crossing will not render properly. i.e. frogs and guard rails will not show. I have joined yard track to spur track as well as yard track to the plain rails which I use for street running.
