Ready to swear off Workshop scenarios

Unread postby Shale » Mon Nov 13, 2017 5:33 pm

Yesterday I ran into a problem loading any scenarios on HSC: crash with memory dump when I tried. Other routes worked fine. I had purchased the RS-11 addon and subscribed to two or three scenarios on the Steam Workshop. No joy from either LogMate or RW-Tools so I tried verifying my local files. The Steam verification reported 38 or so missing files which were then downloaded. I tried one of the RS-11 scenarios and was able to run it. Great!, I think, that's sorted!

Today I try to run TS and I get a popup telling me it is updating Workshop scenarios. Can't click 'Okay'... the program has crashed. Sigh. Restart and it hangs on "Updating scenario database". Okay... I go to steam and unsubscribe the scenarios then use RW-Tools to delete them. Verify local files and download 27 missing files. Still crashes at "Updating scenario database". Grrr.

Long and short of it, renamed my Railworks folder to Railworks_broken and reinstalled. Working once again but now I have the pleasure of reinstalling all third-party content. Before I do, I think I'll backup the Railworks folder to an external drive.

I'm not eager to go through this process again so I'm very reluctant to subscribe to Workshop scenarios in the future.

After all that Sue, I would swear off the WS stuff too. Myself, I don't run any of that stuff as it always seemed to crash my rig. Good luck to you on the 3rd party installs.

I've successfully run at least 40to 50 Workshop scenarios from time to time. A few did not work, but never to a crash to my desktop. The game would just tell me I'm missing certain assets, then I would delete the scenario. I've just run North American routes, also with equipment required.
Your missing out on some very talented scenario makers out there that have spent hours making these for all to enjoy. Search for the highest rated ones as they seem to work the best. !*salute*!

I've read a few threads on the Steam community about similar problems, particularly with subscribing to multiple scenarios as I did. Something to do with failure to unpack multiple zip files... !*don-know!*

One thread suggested a technique for manually installing the Workshop scenarios as a workaround: https://steamcommunity.com/app/24010/discussions/3/1319961868327748569/. Might be worth trying it out. I would very much like to be able to access GreatNortherner's scenarios for the VNHRR.

I'll report back on how it goes.

Hopefully,

I tried the manual installation approach with eleven Workshop scenarios for the VNHRR. It seemed to work fine. It's getting a bit late now so I'll try a number of them for the HSC route tomorrow and see how it goes.

Cheers,

This morning I added fourteen scenarios for the HSC route using the manual approach. Most of the scenarios had filenames like <string of numbers>-legacy.bin rather than ending in .zip. Renaming them to *.zip allowed them to be installed. This technique looks like a winner, to me. A bit more effort than simply subscribing but worth it to me if I don't have to put up with crashes.

Cheers,

I wrote the manual install method for workshop scenarios because of the constant issues I had when loading "automatically" via STEAM.
The manual method was suggested to me by Gary - "gptech" from UKTS and Mike Simpson - RW_Tools.
Since install ALL WS items this way none have failed or caused TS to crash.

I find that I need to unsubscribe through my Steam profile page when this happens usually the last few I downloaded. Steam profile page>profile>workshop items>Subscribed items.
