How to move around route using 2D map

Unread postby dick8299 » Sun Nov 22, 2015 3:03 pm

I have searched every combination of queries I can think of and have not found an answer for my question.

It used to be that you could open the 2D map, hold down control and left click a point on the map, open the compass and use the arrow to go there i the route.

My problem is that the compass does not appear at the top of the map like it used to (it does in edit mode but not in play mode).

So how do I move from one point in the route to another using the 2D map (9 key) when playing a Free Roam scenario?

Are you sure it used to?
I don't remember that.

Use to be a compass at the top in RW3 not to sure what screen it was on though but, wherever it was it is no longer there.

To paraphrase an old song, "You're much younger than I".

Yes, indeed, sliding the mouse toward the top center of the screen while driving a scenario used to reveal the compass, but that useful trick vanished some time ago without rhyme nor reason being offered by RSC, not even a !!**sorry**!!

!!howdy!!

As things stand now, the only way that I know of to do what you want is to go into the World Editor while still in the Free Roam Scenario, bring up the 2D map, and navigate to where you want to go using the compass technique as you describe.

As has already been said, there is no compass dropdown in the 2D map while in the Drive menu, other than through the World Editor.

If you’ve already chosen and are driving an engine when you go into the World Editor, the newly selected location will revert back to your engine’s location (or occasionally go to the middle of nowhere) when you exit the World Editor – you can’t remain at the newly chosen location, but you can make changes there while in the editor.

If you open a Free Roam scenario and go into the World Editor immediately without choosing an engine, you can navigate to anywhere on the route, remain there, and also choose to drive an engine you may have placed previously at that new location. This is an easy way to get around scenarios having only a single starting point, if it's a Free Roam scenario.

Not really what you want to do, but if you’re into Free Roam scenarios like I am, it may be of interest.

If you already knew all this, sorry for the wasted space and bytes.

And then you can open another thread, asking why TS2016 crashed! !*roll-laugh*! !*hp*!

I've never had a crash due to following the described procedure. I do it all the time on Free Roams I've created, having loaded them down very heavily with DLC placed all over the route, in addition to scenery object additions. The scenarios are on high density urban routes, e.g. Hamburg-Hanover and Northeast Corridor Phila.>NY, an exception being Sherman Hill. Although, the more I keep playing with SH in the editors, the denser it gets. I think it's called Bob Artim Syndrome ("I don't know how to stop, I give it all I got...")

The worst result I've experienced is a little slow down in frame rates on H-H in the vicinity of Hamburg and the large yards. But never a crash.

I will admit the sim at times has looked like it was about to toss its cookies while loading all the goodies at one or two newly selected locations while in the World Editor, but so far it's kept them down. *!greengrin!*

As we know, computers and computer specs. have a good deal to do with variations in personal experience with this sim.
