Cannot start Railworks...

Unread postby crocs4022 » Tue Nov 10, 2015 12:51 am

Well, this one has stumped me. I've searched online and right here and haven't found an issue similar. After a few month hiatus (no time to play with a newborn and a full time job), I wanted to jump back into things and run some trains. Been lurking the forums almost daily so i'm up to speed with TS16 and what not. I backed up my railworks folder of course. Then ended up browsing steam which automatically downloaded the upgrade for me which went smoothly (to my knowledge). Now mind you I didn't touch the original install. So tonight I attempt to start the game and I get a gray pop-up box from steam stating that it wants to download and install Railworks to my computer. This is a strange one. I went back and double checked to make sure the original install was in the steam folder (because strange things start to happen after 12am when you're sleep deprived), and sure enough, its still there. So I guess my question is, does anyone have any idea what's going on here? Similar issues? Or am I the odd man out at the moment?

I can't say that this has ever happened to me before. Before clicking yes, to download and install again, I would back up any custom or 3rd party assets you have installed.

I'm wondering if this is the old "ClientRegistry.blob" issue.
If I remember this right, you need to go into your Steam folder and delete that entry. Then Steam will create a fresh one.

Actually I think the problem has been caused by you. There was no need to browse through Steam to get the update. All you had to do was start up Steam if you don't have auto login when you start TS and then start up TS2015 and then it would of automatically updated to TS 2016, if you had of done it correctly you wouldn't have the problem. Plenty of instructions on how to update TS2015 to TS2016 on Steam.

Interesting, will look into this as well and see if that works, thanks!

Re-reading what I originally posted, I can see how you would come to that conclusion. My intent wasn't to have the update come down that way. I had been browsing the workshop a few days prior to actually attempting to start the sim, which I should have stated in the first post. I never played it that day the update came through; looking back on it I should have to see if it worked. (And I do have the auto login set up also). I've never had issues in the past with the sim updating that way. But, if this is the cause for the issue, please correct me if I'm wrong. The advice is greatly appreciated.

Basically what a lot of people do is to make a backup of there previous version (also explained on Steam) so if something decides to go belly up in the upgrade they can revert back to that. I have a backup of TS2015. I have never had failures in upgrades too TS. Had it since 2010. :D

Which is what i've done before every update i've gone through, including one for TS2015. Been around since TS2012 myself. What's funny is that i've never run into an issue at all before this mess. Every update went smoothly and I never had to revert to any of my backups. Guess there's a first time for everything as they say.

Well, tried this to see if that was the issue and no such luck. Letting it run its course now and re-installing the sim (even though it makes no sense since everything is already there). I'll just revert to my backup once this is done and then make a new backup once everything is up and running.
