Rail Traffic

Unread postby Shortliner » Sun Aug 18, 2013 6:08 pm

So I was playing Marias West Slope, Pt. 1 & Pt. 2 today on RailWorks, and I've noticed that there was a high volume of rail traffic going the opposite way. It seem like I had a meet every 10 minutes. However, I'm a bit confused about this because I remember when I was trying out for VORA, the guy who was running it (TrainMaster something something) always stated that it's rare you see more than a few trains (I think he said three was the maximum) when working as a train crew.

So which is more accurate, the scenario or TrainMaster? I mean I would think that rail traffic would depend on the line, what day it is, time of day, etc. Because I know that some day, the Norfolk Southern line that runs through Salisbury has several trains leaving Linwood Yard in an hour, but other days, nothing will happen for hours on end.

Can anyone give me an insight to how rail traffic works?

North Platte Nebraska has 150 per day. Approximately 75 trains per 12 hours (maximum crew shift)

A simple google search has shown me that Marias Pass gets 40-50 a day.

That's a lot for 100 miles of tracks.

Whenever I land at Cleveland to wait for my connecting flight to Erie (@1 hour) I can see anywhere from 4 to 6 trains in either direction.
