Double Stacks and Z-trains

Real world question. I know the railroads have been running trailer on flat car since the 1940's. When did they start running double stacks and Z-trains? Was it in the 1980's or 90's, or was it eariler?

im quite shure the first official ones were in the mid 80's, although I do know SP was doing tests earlier than that with the 1st generation stack cars.
