Free Steam Locomotive and 2 Passenger cars

Unread postby SCLALINE » Thu Dec 01, 2011 10:57 pm

The City of Orlando is Giving away a famous Steam locomotive and 3 passenger cars - one is a streamlined dome, the other is a HW observation - the loco is Frisco 0-6-0 "Switcher" which was retired in 1952, it was used in the filming of the 1957 john ford film on wings of eagles with John Wayne
problem is the esitmated cost to move the train is $300,000
the city wants it out of there to make room for the new sunrail station - if no one takes it , they will be cut for scrap

I know some guys who work at a railroad museum who might be able to spread this information around to other interested parties. It's probably out of their museum's league, but I'm sure they have other contacts that might be interested. Can you give me some more information, and possibly the contact info of the group that's selling the train so I can give it the museum guys?

A company named "Tremont Realty Capital" which I suspect owns the to be built SunRail station. They own the locomotive and accompanying cars. The passenger cars might be saved and go to someone in the AAPRCO (American Association of Private Railroad Car Owners). The locomotive on the other hand....

If it has spent it's years outside with no cover and still has asbestos lagging at BEST it will ever be is a static display. $300K to move it plus what ever it is going to cost for asbestos abatement. As bad as I hate to see stuff like that go, who would give that kind of cheddar for a static display. I have seen crazier stuff though. Look at NC&StL 576 in Centennial Park in Nashville TN. I was with one railroad museum that had gotten wind that the city wanted to get rid of it as a liability. I know 2 other museums found out after we did. Another guy and myself actually went up to see how to move it. Took a couple of weekends to figure out. Then we started getting "probed" on how "we" would move it. I would not say a word. That would be somebodies crown jewel. Still up for grabs I think.

You can also look at what Dollywood has done. Another family park you can railfan. Glad to see that I am not the only one who does that. WDWRR also has a couple of really stiff grades that just makes it better!

i was gonna suggest Coopersville and Marne Railway or Steam Railroading Institute. STI is amazing at restoring stuff and would love to see some nice passenger cars for their excursions.
