Ah. Saluda grade where it's 5.9% grade reduced a Dash 9 to nothing more then a pathetic tank engine in terms of horsepower per ton.

Oh, crap. Saw this one on a link from that video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Iy6rNMM ... =fvwp&NR=1

#3985 catches fire! But, look at what the helper is! A DD40X! Saweet! Would have loved to see that! (not the fire, the lash up)

Shot at the bottom of the grade (this isn't even the steepest part). The photographer is standing on the "run-away" track. Trains coming down the grade were "timed" literally. If they descended to fast the train was considered a run away and the switch for the run away track (2 of them) would be set.

NS cut the tracks on both ends in 2001 and abandoned it. But the rails still remain waiting.

Here's a clip from the first "Lackawanna Railfest" at Steamtown (the best one in my opinion). I was riding one of the trips. 2-8-2 #3254 has a moment upgrade, then finally stalls:

And what it looked liked from outside (not taken by me): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76NP_7mi4O8

Doesn't that cause damage to the tracks and the steam engine?

It can if it isn't bought under control.

If the locomotive continues to slip in one spot this happens:
