Anyone who thinks the Genesis ( or even those things ) are ugly just has to look at what GE is foisting upon europe...

I don't think the Genesis is ugly, but that is. Just another bus. !*hp*!

Actually, I think that is far better looking than the Genesis, at least they've used a trapezium shape for the windows to give the design a bit of apparent motion, whereas the Genesis is a completely slab-sided collection of first-choice angles which look like no thought whatsoever has been spent on such aspects other than the bodyshell's basic function to keep rain off the internals. To be fair it is difficult to make something both graceful when it is big (see the Airbus A380 for example), but the Genesis looks like they did not even try.

Completely agree on some of the monstrosities GE has done for Europe though, with in particular, the Class 70 PH37ACmi Powerhaul which Freightliner use being so ugly that it has a face not even a mother could love.

Looks similar to the F40PHM-2 used by Metra.

Neither do I find this ugly, nor the Genesis.

I don't think the one in the OP looks too bad. I kindda like it actually. As for the Genesis, it has more of "meh" look to me. GE could have made it look better, but it's not terrible and I wouldn't call it ugly. Besides, it's FAR from the ugliest locomotive they've ever built.

Why are builders now so averse to curves?
All those square boxes are ugly, to be honest.

Looking at the F40PH, it is just a squared-up F7.
What was wrong the F nose or the shark nose?

Visibility, safety, crew comfort (tho that last one can be taken with a grain of salt if you have ever been in a ratty, run down EMD standard cab...). Take your pick.

The F7 cab was bare bone right down to the paint, no comfort in that thing:

Yuck, that's ugly! !*roll-laugh*!

I like the Genesis... it's one of the most modern-looking rides in the U.S. isn't it? I think the sharp angles and squares reflect the transportation architecture of the times which has been been based on the Space Shuttle and Stealth planes for quite a few years. Automobile styles are changing though so maybe locomotives will follow suit someday soon. Somewhere someone posted a photo of a sort of streamlined SD series-looking thing that I thought looked pretty bad.

Sorry, the U50C looks like a swan compared to this ugly duckling:

I'm actually trying to think of a nastier piece of locomotive design *ever*. I miss the days companies employed designers to style them - or maybe that was just UK companies.

I know, but it would be easy to keep the external shape and modernize the interior.
Add a desk-type control station, reinforced nose structure, toilet room in the nose, fridge.

Maybe a flower pot, a few cushions and a GPS, now that they have female engineers.
OK I'm gonna stop now.

My thoughts precisely.

I always think the U50C looks like it was designed by Jim Henson, it has a face like a Muppet, but it still doesn't beat the Class 70 for rotten looks, because frankly, the Class 70 looks like it was designed by Tomy.

Let's face it, the class 70 looks like it was designed by Stevie Wonder!
