Cool Railroad Bridges

Unread postby Hawk » Sun Jul 24, 2011 8:02 am

Since I like bridges, I thought I'd start a thread about cool, unique, and/or different railroad bridges.
Here's my entry. I found this double-decker bridge (train on top, cars on the bottom) in Brunswick, ME. I believe it's the Pan Am Rw. that runs over it, right where it connects to the Maine Eastern RR.
The coordinates for it in Google Earth are lat: 43.916091 - lon: -69.975123

I wish I could have caught that one with a train on the upper level. That would have been really cool. *!greengrin!*

One of my favorites:

There are actually two single-track bridges in these shots, both of which are on the CSX Selkirk Subdivision (ex-NYC, nee Conrail). The bridge in the foreground consists of two truss and one deck girder span, while the bridge in the background is a continuous deck span supported by three steel towers. The line passes next to the Watervliet Reservoir Dam at French's Hollow in the town of Guilderland, NY. :D
Cheers!

To me, no bridge can be cooler than the famous Keddie Wye in the Feather River Canyon:

That's a cool bridge too. Just the opposite of the one I posted, except this one is a swing bridge and that one in Maine isn't.

Has to be the Forth Rail bridge for me, but I'm somewhat biased by location :P

Easily find a lot of stunning pics of it with a quick google search.

Bridge from my area: Hell Gate Bridge.

Once part of the New York Connecting Railroad, 4 tracks wide. Now carries 3 tracks (2 for the NEC and 1 for freight):

Total Length: 17,000 feet (3.2 mi; 5.2 km).
Width: 100 feet (30.5 m).
Longest span: 1,017 feet (310 m).
Clearance below: 135 feet (41.1 m).

Couple more famous ones from over here for people who might not have seen them - given how hilly the UK is there's a vast selection to choose from, I'm trying to find the more interesting but less famous ones.

Berwick Viaduct on the East coast main line, built by Robert Stephenson ( he of Rocket fame ).

Brunel's Tamar bridge near Plymouth on the line to Cornwall. - too big to sanely post.
