Grab a rock, have a seat, and talk about the real world of trains.

Woman dies impacted by the steam loco of a train while taking a selfie

Unread postby jalsina » Wed Jun 05, 2024 6:38 pm

I got this video of railfans in a Spanish Sports site, taking pictures of a steam locomotive train and other old CP locomotives, where a woman was taking a selfie too close to the track and was caught in the head by the train, supposedly dying. Seeing the images, I can see the rolling stock is from Canadian Pacific. *!sad!*

P.S. It was in México according to a Twitter in the same article.

This involved the Canadian Pacific H1b 4-6-4 2816 on it's final spike tour from Calgary to Mexico City. The 29 year old woman was struck and killed near Nopala De Villagran, Mexico about 60 miles North of Mexico City while taking a selfie. The deceased was one of many other spectators who ignored warnings from security officials to stay a safe distance from the tracks.
Another person was killed when hit by UP 844 in 2018 in Colorado.

This was unfortunately bound to happen sooner or later, after watching plenty videos of the train being down there and with how close everyone is to the track its only a miracle it hasn't happened sooner. Very unfortunate and I wouldn't be surprised if CPKC now refuses to take 2816 down to Mexico ever again due to the risk being so much higher there for pedestrian collisions.

Yes. It´s a total lack of safety down in Mexico for these situations. I would say due to a non-existing railfan culture. In the US you see in the railfan videos, that they are used to take tough safety measures and even so there are plenty of accidents along the year. There are also the railroad police, that helps on those situations.

Did you see that the lady had her child with her and seconds before she tells him to get down?
