I remember a series called "Everything's Harder In Alaska" it was either Discovery or History channel. They showed ferries that moved the rail cars on the Alaskan Railway like this, but this is a barge. The ferries carried twice as many cars!

Well, a lot of RR used to have such services, for example the Western Pacific:

The NC&StL had a river ferry operation here in Alabama. 26 miles one way. It ran from Hobbs Island / Incline ( Huntsville ) to Gunters Landing ( Guntersville ). When NC&StL mergged with the L & N in 1957 they took it out of service. It was said to be the longest mileage rail ferry service in the US when it was taken out of service. There is quite a lot about it on the internet.
