MENLO, Iowa -- Authorities are trying to figure out how someone tampered with a train switch in an effort to derail a train.
Railroad Officials discovered a switch box that was broken into about a quarter of a mile west of Menlo early Sunday morning.
"We discovered that someone had tampered with a switch in the Menlo Iowa vicinity in an attempt to derail a train," said Mick Burkart, Iowa Interstate Railroad's Chief Operating Officer. "A train went there and thought the switch target was not right. Notified our train dispatcher who immediately got ahold of the following train and that train stopped short of Menlo," said Burkart.
All trains were shut down from 4 a u.m.ntil noon. Burkhart said that if an alert crew had not made the discovery as quickly as it did then the consequences would have been devastating.
"At some point a train coming in there would have derailed. We do handle ethanol in that area. There could have been a fire. There could have been fatalities to the crew members. It's basically right in town, so there could have been consequences to the local citizens," said Burkart.
The FBI is assisting the Iowa State Patrol and the Guthrie County Sheriff in the investigation. The FBI says it does not believe this to be a terrorist threat.
Neighbors told KCCI that investigators were there all morning taking fingerprints, and told them they suspect that more than one person is responsible for breaking into the switch box.

Wow, that is just crazy stupid stuff. Hope they catch them.

He he he, I used to feel guilty about putting a penny or a nickle on the local stub line when I was a kid. Darn, now the Feds will be after me for defacing US currency. !!bang!!
