Wow! That really makes you stop and take a second look at all the train routes that run through rugged terrain. You can never tell when mother nature will throw in something unexpected.

Also how old alot of the rail tunnels are. Sure, upkeep is preformed on the supporting structures but the original tunnel cut is still the same one since they were first bored all those years ago.

Plus think about how much bigger and heavier the consists have become in comparison to the type of rail equipment that the original road paths were made for. Some of those right of ways look a little small for the type of traffic that uses it today.

Also give a thought to a single ring-of-fire earthquake causing a tunnel shift and separating the two bores into solid rock. Take the BNSF Northern Transcon for example. Think of the impact.....
