Become a Locomotive Engineer
Sign on as a Nevada Northern Railway diesel locomotive engineer for a day. You (and a friend, if you like) will climb on board and experience what railroading is really like from the cab of one of our diesel locomotives. The locomotives we use for these runs are our original road diesels that have decades of real revenue experience here on our mainline hauling ore. To operate one of our steam locomotives click here.

So you can get to operate a RS3 or a steam loco.

I've had plenty of friends who know I like trains, hear about this engineer for a day, and ask if it's something I would want to do. The answer used to be: "No, someday I'll get paid to that." Now the answer is: "No, I get paid to do that." !*roll-laugh*!

I'd do it purely on the ability to run something I haven't, really. No coaching neccessary on the basics unless it has lap brakes which is likely. Also territory familiarization.

Older stuff absolutely fascinates me.

I have been there, It is a great place in the middle of nowhere. But has tons of rusty, greasy stuff stacked in corners. Old rolling stock from the copper mine and the original locomotive. Rode behind #40 in the caboose and yes cinders will burn you going through tunnels. You need to remember to shut the head end.
