Amtrak makes another bone headed decision

Grab a rock, have a seat, and talk about the real world of trains.

Amtrak makes another bone headed decision

Unread postby buzz456 » Wed Mar 28, 2018 6:41 pm

Amtrak has decided to discontinue excursion trains because they disrupt their usual late schedules. They claim it's because they don't make any money off the arrangement. Well how about raising the price?

Looks like the UP will be the only one running mainline steam for now I guess, since they use their own crews and don't run under the AMTK banner IIRC.

Huh?? This change only effects Amtrak as it's an internal policy. Any group can run their own excursion provided they have their own engine/crew and can get permission from the owner of the RoW. This just states that Amtrak will no longer pull excursions for others and will more than likely stop pulling private cars as the article explains.

FRA requires an amtrak pusher for HEP and in case of breakdowns, do they not?

I'd like to see where in CFR Title 49 Part 200 - Part 272 it says that...

It does no such thing as you said. Amtrak requires their engine for their insured trips, no more. If host carriers to agree to host further excursions (of course this will bring cost of insurance up), you will find no Amtrak diesels on these trips.
261 has operated under such pretenses in the past. I may not speak on behalf of my organization, but it will be interesting the direction we (and other PV operators) go from here.

We are witnessing the death of American Railroading. It is a long, slow process. It may not be apparent to many, but it is happening. That is then end of the famous "New River Train",for one. You have to be qualified, and have a mega insurance policy to pull passenger equipment. How many operators might that leave, outside of Amtrak?

I think we are seeing the death of long distance passenger service. Commuter lines seem to be doing fine, but Amtrak has terrible on time performance and is insanely expensive for the time it takes to get somewhere.

Other Class-1s could possibly pick up the slack on a case by case basis. After all, Amtrak doesn’t own the rails they ride on, and most delays are caused by the Class-1s priority usage.
Cheers!
