(Hypothetical) UP Turbine Restoration

I noticed that the series of scenarios for the UP GTEL seem to revolve around UP restoring and returning their two remaining turbines into active service. If this actually happened, what physical changes would be made to the train itself?

The first thing to obviously go would be changing the fuel to something more green.

Why would you want to do that when airliners are burning Millions of gallons a day of a more refined version and all of the ships running around the world are burning the same stuff?

First modifications to be made would be to first stop the turbine from it's infamous nickname "big blow". Then they would need to work on some sort of system to help the engine breathe better in tunnels. They would also need to modify the turbine and maybe create a more advanced exhaust port so as it passes by people they won't get their eardrums destroyed. I would also think they would want to modify the fuel from that Bunker C stuff to a fuel type that's easier to get in this day and age like JP7/8. No matter how you look at it restoring a turbine is not very practical in real life without some serious engineering-design work on top of the overall restoration.

Restoration
"...the action of returning something to a former owner, place, or condition."

Put it back exactly like it was. You don't see restorers put electric motors in steam engines, do you?

!!*ok*!! After all it wouldn't be like it was going to be put back in regular service.

I would think quite a few government agencies would have issues now a days with doing an old school restoration on a locomotive design with such a spotty record and would deny all of the paperwork needed to run the locomotive.

They let coal burning steam engines run around and lots of old cars that don't meet emission standards and legacy jets and round engine aircraft that don't meet sound level standards. Why not your odd turbine locomotive?

That reminds me of a few years ago when we were taking some friends to Ft. Meyers main airport RSW and this smokey thing that looked like a 707 was blasting out of there looking like this B52 picture and I said "oh it must be a USAF tanker". My friend said "how can you tell?" I answered" The government writes rules for everyone to obey except them."

As an aside, I managed to see a B52 (and nol it wasn't Kate Pearson *!lol!* ) in the flesh in about 187 when the USAF flew one in from Guam to do some fly overs in conjunction with the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in Adelaide. How the hell those things ever (and continue) to fly is beyond me. Its all wing (which I know is needed to provide lift for payload) - it just looks so out of proportion *!!wink!!*

!*cheers*!

Well hey, Buzz could not have said it any better. That's gotta go down as his quote of the year or something.

i have seen it done a few times.. miniature locos admittedly but it does happen.. ticks me off to no end too when i see some of the works of art that have been butchered to provide a 5 year old with a train of his very own....
