Had this piece of junk in my train yesterday in Chicago (Proviso), should be on its way to the Illinois Railway Museum soon.

what the heck is that hunk of scrap? and how the devil is it still safe to move?

It appears to be some sort of electric locomotive. Trucks tell me it's an ALCO, but I'm not sure if ALCO had any electrics. If anything my guess is a GE E33 or E44 or something along those lines.

It's on it's way to the Illinois Railroad Museum.

Funny you should say that. My Engineer and I spent almost an hour climbing around that thing trying to figure out where the hand brake was. The spray painted signs said in the short nose, but we couldn't find it. Then finally after digging around and probably getting tetanus (from all the rust) found it, and found out it didn't work.

There was nothing on our paperwork about it, so we asked the yard master:
Does it have any speed restrictions?
"I don't know."
Is it 'boxcar'd' (brakes cut out)?
"I don't know."
Can you tell us anything about it?
"Standby.....No!"

Ah dealing with other railroad's messes... Back when the SSRR moved freight, we would sometimes get cars with handbrakes that didn't work or airhoses that wouldn't lace because their glad hands were broken. Almost every single conductor I had would look at it and say something along the lines of "F-it, we'll leave it for UP to fix. I'm just a volunteer, I'm not about to risk moving this cut without air." And the cars would stay put until UP fixed it.

But the minute we bring in a visiting locomotive from Amtrak, UP, or Siemens, their crews are standing guard, running around it, won't let us touch a thing other than to couple it to our engine. We're barely allowed to look at it!
