148th Anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad

Unread postby CArailroader » Wed May 10, 2017 5:54 pm

Today marks the 148th Anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. To help celebrate the occasion, the city of Sacramento, Union Pacific, and the California State Railroad Museum held an event today. Since we have no CPRR equipent that can come out in the sun, we used VTRR #21, J.W. Bowker and hooked up compressed air to play the whistle.

Here is the video of the whistle and bell:

I watched the broadcast on Facebook Live. Great to hear the brass band playing an old version of The Star Spangled Banner!

It would be nice, but I've got a number of other things I want to do after 119.

My point is anyone that would bother to look up the history of the golden spike would see that there is a unique history behind it. There's actually 3 versions. 1 brass (fake), and 2 real although slightly different.

I believe what Buzz was trying to get at is, if you're going to post the above statement, at least contribute the information behind it so we understand the meaning.

As for it not being the real golden spike, its very real. Just not the one used in the ceremony as stated in the link shared. We actually had an attempted theft several years ago, thank God they were unsuccessful, but the spike was off site for almost three years while the display case was being repaired.
