Georgetown Loop Railroad Visit

Unread postby slick204 » Tue Apr 26, 2016 10:43 pm

I previously posted about my trip up to the Alpine Tunnel in southwestern Colorado so I'm finally getting around to putting up some pictures from last year's trip. Due to poor planning we just did day trips out of the Denver area. The first trip was to the Georgetown Loop. It seems appropriate with the new Clear Creek Narrow Gauge route coming out soon.

I was in contact with our own "FourEightFour" for the inside scoop (he's an engineer for the Loop) and intended on meeting up. However he had car problems and wasn't able to make it. I hope your car repairs weren't too expensive! Unfortunately the Shay wasn't in any better shape. We started at the Silver Plume end of the line.

The depot appears in a screenshot of the new route. Now even a sick Shay is a joy to behold, to me anyway!

We were allowed to walk around the engine as long as we didn't get in the way. Everyone was very friendly. Apparently there was a bearing issue.

Now the business side of the Shay, exposed for all to see.

And a few more shots since I couldn't stop taking pictures of #9.

More in next post.

They had a pair of small GE diesels for power. I couldn't find much about them on their web page. We're stopped here for a tour of the Lebanon mine.

Just a few more. Some interesting rolling stock parked along the way. Love those aspens!

On the way back up the hill, the diesels were putting out some smoke!

We all had an enjoyable time and I'd recommend it for anyone. I guess I'll have to go back to catch the Shay in action. I gotta see it!

I have more pictures from the trip if anyone is interested. We did a trip part way up Argentine Pass and a couple of trips up Rollins Pass; both are old railroad grades. Good stuff for a rail fan!
