Of course that has all changed now.

That last sentence is intriguing...what's changed now?

In the past when UP has had to switch in Edison (what little there still is) the consist was usually made up of a few covered hopper's and some refers and a remote controlled GP-38. Since Edison is only about five miles out UP would shunt up the hill backwards with a caboose at the front end. As you can imagine going up hill at 15 mph is a slow daunting task. Both BNSF and UP would have to stop inbound traffic into Bakersfield until the crews could get off the main. I think the local crews had complained about it so much that UP finally replaced the GP-38 with two SD-40's. I saw the crew a few weeks ago going up to Edison at track speed with the locos at the front end(no caboose) Kern Jct as of right now is a bit of a mess. Union Pacific has pretty much rebuilt the yard, replacing all the switches and most of the yard track. UP is also building a new bypass track of sorts. They have taken one of the yard tracks and turned it into a main line track so UP trains will no longer have to wait for BNSF trains to get through Kern Jct.(Think of Colton Crossing minus the flyover) Of course all of this comes with the new CTC signals that are being installed. In the coming weeks I will see about getting some pictures up so you can all see our new Kern Jct. I'll even post some shot's of the new tank car facility that can load over 100 tank cars simultaneously.

Yes... the pictures would be nice. I didn't go to Bakersfield on my trip 2 months ago, so it would be cool to see what's new there.

I usually stick to the area between Caliente (mainly Bealville) and Tehachapi. I do so cuz I want to see the locos on the steepest parts of the grade where they are working at their hardest. Although the loop is the most scenically pleasing part of the route, Bealville is my favorite spot overall cuz I love watching and hearing trains wind-up from a dead-stop out of the siding there (which is why I put that 8-engined BNSF train (only the first 2 were running) pulling out of it from a stop as the first clip of my trip video).

I also love the elevated view from my chair on top of the flat rocks beside the tracks at the Woodford siding (also in my video).

I'm very curious as to how they plan to run the California high speed train through Tehachapi Pass. Anybody who has been there knows there isn't a lot of space to add track.... let alone to run trains at a high rate of speed. They show on a general map it going through the pass, but no detailed maps showing precisely it's path or how it's going to safely maintain any level of high speed across it. !**duh*!!
EMD 2-strokes rule! My all time favorite: SD45X also love the SD40-2/SD40T-2/SD45-2/SD45T-2/DD35A/DDA40X/SD70ACe/SD80ACe

A couple of months back, I was out and about shooting pics around Woodford and Rowen and I got to chatting to one of the locals. The mention of the high speed rail makes the blood boil with most in that area. I was told the plan is to run elevated line through that whole area. One of the land owners took the CHSRA to court over land usage, he won and then they came behind him and claimed "immanent domain". That's some dirty pool there.
