ok, so in parts of the video, when they put down the track, it looks like they don't square of the rails, and looks like some of the rail lies withing the pre-existing rail. can anyone explain that? or the fact that they don't square it off and put 2 ends together?

If you're talking about the track joints in the lower part of the picture, I think after taking another look at them, they are derails on the bridge approach.

They are derails, I've seen them open when the bridge is turned. I'd guess they prefer to pick locos off the ground to re-rail them, rather than pick them out of the river.
