I was told by the U.P. Steam Crew that 844 was in good condition when they brought 4014 through, but I've since learned the engine was getting close to it's 15 year inspection.
Apparently they decided to retube her and give her a complete rebuild.
They also admitted (very embarrassed) that 844 had a burner accident and there was some damage in the firebox plating. I think they told me the Top Sheet was warped in the accident.
3985 was in good shape according to them, but it's been sitting so long, I wouldn't be surprised if it is getting close to a major inspection interval.
I thought they told me 3985 needed relatively minor work like new tires and bearings, but that was then.

...just relaying info from the facebook page for UP 844/3985; although the people posting there seem to be arguing with each other about the veracity of certain statements so, I dunno? That's what I get for listening to people who are arguing!
