I jsut watched the news here in Australia, and today they were talking about 2 crashes
1 in mexico, the other in Philly

the mexico one was a metro train rear ending another

THe philly one however, looks insane, cars twished up, some completely destroyed, unsure what caused it, some passengers said it went to fast into a corner, we shall have to wait and see

This ought to be interesting, since a brand new ACS-64 engine was on the front (Amtrak number 601) at the Philadelphia wreck.

Excuse my ignorance but what does that have to do with the accident?

We are wondering if the new engine may be linked to the derailment. It happened in a curve, much like the metro north derailment. Not sure if speed was the cause at this time. NTSB is scheduled to be on scene and start investigation around 11am est.

I'm also wondering if the new engine type has something to do with it. Amtrak has had problems with ordering new engines that are stable at speed in the past. That's how they ended up with the Toasters (AEM-7s) years ago. No one in this country could properly design a high speed electric passenger engine anymore.
They also traced a series of accidents to the then new SDP40Fs back in the 70s. The SDP40Fs were supposed to be high speed cross country heavy haul engines, but ended up being expensive heavy haul engines on local commuter runs.
Ironically the F40PH was supposed to be a commuter engine, but Amtrak found themselves working them on long haul passenger routes.

The Amtrak E60s weren't exactly a success either...

The Amtrak derailment might be speed related - perhaps 100+ MPH into a 50 MPH curve. The Black Box should tell more. The Engineer apparently is OK.

We should know more in a day or two.

We should start a pool.

Pretty good odds are texting or some other electronic entertainment.

Second on the list would be falling asleep.
