Abandoned?

As you can see some of the signals are off and some of the wooden ties are missing however the rails look like recently used (shininess ove rails)

When I have seen this before it means the opposite. They are upgrading the track for use.

Yep - it's obvious the searchlights are awaiting Vader replacements.

Some of the ties are rotten and or missing
However it looked recently used
I could of sworn I heard a k5hl horn last nght in my hotel room

OK nvm I saw a coast starlight on hat line
But would train be able to go with in operational sigs?

The new signals aren't in operation yet but the searchlight signals are still in operation.
On a recent trip to visit grandparents, Union Pacific was upgrading signals between Salt Lake City, UT and Laramie, WY. On the way west, the old signals were still being used for both directions even though the new signals had been mounted. On the way back east, UP was in the process of aligning and activating the new signals and taking down the old signals.

That is a busy line, used by the Coast Starlight, UP, and BNSF. It was the main SP route that bypassed the Siskiyou pass through to Weed and South, and the interconnect for the SP&S to Wishram and Portland. The signal upgrade is a joint operation.
