Happy Canada day!

Dear USA,

We get that you don’t get it. But, believe it or not, Canada is not a colony of your country. We’re an independent nation and we have a day to celebrate that independence. It’s like the Fourth of July ... but better...

On July 1, 1867, the Dominion of Canada was created. No war. Not even a skirmish.
Notice how 1867 comes after 1812? That means you can stop getting angry at us about that war you lost. You were fighting the English, not us.
You think you’re the only ones with Founding Fathers? Not a chance. We’ve got “Fathers of Confederation.”
And everything about Canada Day is so fresh...
- We’re only 147 years old.
- Our flag is just 49 years old.
- We’ve only been calling it Canada Day since 1982 (it was Dominion Day before that).
- And "O Canada" only became our official anthem in 1980.

See the original, with photos here: http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2014/06/30 ... 38667.html

Have a great party!

You are sort of like Obama Frank. Set up a straw man that doesn't exist. Who says we don't get it?

I don't get it. You mean to say there are people out there that actually think Canada was a colony of America?

... must of been a rumor started by the French

I've been around long enough to remember the Dominion and her flag well, and am right proud of the fact that our flags and our soldiers went into Normandy side by side. Life's too short to fuss, so y'all have a happy Canada Day, ya hear? !*cheers*!

Yeah... I've not met anyone who thought Canada had been an American colony. I do find it amazing that a country so large has a population smaller than the state California. !**duh*!!

Okay, story time: as many of you know, I spend part of each year in Italy, specifically in a small mountain town called Cortona. Our local town band sometimes invites other, similar groups to come over for a music festival. One year, this event drew rain and both musicians and audience had to jam themselves in under the loggia in front of our theater. As I listened to the music under my umbrella, I suddenly heard a tune as familiar as it was unexpected: one of the groups had struck up O Canada. Though my one year of residence in Ottawa does not allow me to claim residence, I nevertheless felt a certain swell of pride.

Buona festa, Canadiani!
