Working Vacation

Imagine my surprise, and my wife's chagrin, when I found that in addition to major railroad trackage around the Port, Savannah also has a railroad museum!

One of the multiple switchers in the roundhouse as the Georgia Railroad Museum

This steamer was off limits, but a loose tarp on the back of the roundhouse afforded a quick peek.

The museum has two model railroad layouts, in HO and N scales. This loco for some reason looks very familiar.

A stuffed and mounted GP35.

A familiar face, 400 miles from home. This is one of two eight-man crew cars that originated from the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum.

This tanker is the bread and butter of the museum, hauling tourists on it's limited trackage.

And, as an added bonus, as I was hunting for the city's Amtrack station, I stumbled upon these two short-line locomotives waiting on a siding on the Georgia Central.

In the "kind of train related" category, since the Central of Georgia was kind enough to build a network of tracks and yards all around Savannah, the city decided to build a port to support all of those trains! Most of the traffic coming to and fro were break-bulks, LPN's, and chemical ships. But twice a day, during high tide, the really big boys with boxes from all over Europe came to port. This photo was taken from the south end of the shipping channel.

There are too many pics of the railroad museum and ships to post here, so i'll put them up over at http://vrailcreations.net

Nice shots. Wife and I visited Savannah a few years ago. Took Amtrak from Chicago. Definitely not a direct run.
We had the museum to ourselves. Great city. !*cheers*!
