The Icestorm of 2014

Unread postby harryadkins » Sun Feb 16, 2014 10:25 am

On Tuesday, we began having mixed sleet/rain that turned to heavy rain that evening. On Wednesday morning our power went out and we were surrounded by what sounded like gunshots as trees were snapping all around. We were able to get to a neighbor who had gas logs and camped out in her den with three boys ages 5-2-4 months. Power crews from all over the southeast are finally getting our power restored. Our power came back on last night about 7pm. I don't think there is a tree in our county that is intact. Internet/cable tv/landline phones are yet to come.

You guys got the poop-end of that storm. We got 6" of snow tuesday, but the roads stayed clear. It all melted off when it started raining Wednesday, but by the afternoon we had 1/4" of ice on everything. That night, six more inches of snow that coated everything. No big power issues though as the wind stayed calm. And, as is typical for Georgia, next day it was 50F! Drove almost all day trying to get good snow/train photos, and by evening, it's 90% gone.

Darn global warming!

Got the air-conditioning on down here in south Florida. I miss the snow (and English speaking people).

Yup. That's an effect of global warming. Wreaks havoc on existing equilibrium, displaces the Jet Stream, leading to unpredictable changes in local weather. Ironic, isn't it?

Reminds me of this video - how a small effect can break equilibrium, leading to larger effects.

And the funniest thing about global warming is that we are having the exact same weather we had when I was a child - hot as hell in the summer, deep cold with snow two or three times in the winter.

Maybe I should have said "Maunder Minimum".

And a major drought in California... Send it to our mountains quick.

You sir are a lot more correct than these mindless ninnies with nothing but junk science backing up their positions. They not us are the ultimate deniers.

Yikes. I do believe in climate change. The problem, and for me there are many reasons, is believing that it's man made versus four billion years of natural cycles. Anyway, my official position is Dale Gribble, who said;

"Let the world warm up. We'll grow Oranges in Alaska."

(And the beach will be four hours closer!)

Keep it light folks!

Climate change has been going on forever and until the Sun eats the Earth it will continue.

Hey Buzz. I'm southeast of you. Got 8-9 inches of the cold white flakes. Started the snow blower and told my wife, "here ya go". (she enjoys doing it) !*salute*!
Oh, I made sure there was gas in it.
