The bottom line is numbers are just numbers. Try to stay safe use best practices and let's hope we are all here talking about more positive stuff six months from now.

For all of the overreactions out there when you weed out the drama and start looking into what doctors and small independent sources are saying, it paints a more realistic picture. A lot of people have come to the conclusion so far that this coronavirus is 10 times more deadly than the average flu season.

While that's still an average of 1/100 chance of dieing from the virus it's by all means a horrific manner of death with severe pneumonia.

Humanity has suffered through much worse diseases but I think the big shock this time around is all the technology in the world that we've become so dependent on can't save us.

Well this was nice. I get up at 4:30, play with the cats as they know I am up, and I go through the bathroom procedures, grab my tea bags and milk and head to work. When I get there is it dark. One of my co workers is usually there at 5 AM. I punched in and started water for my 1st cup of tea, and went in my office and started up my computer. Pull up the email and see one for everyone in the company that was sent at 6PM Friday. I was off Thursday and Friday, so I did not get the email. No one called me either. So not sure of what is going on I drank my tea and waited to see if anyone was coming in. They usually start coming in at 6. AT 6:15 no one showed up so I punched out and turned everything back off. Heaters, lights and computer and went out side in my car and waited another 15 minutes. I saw my boss was across the street, but he never came across the road. So I left. 45 minutes on the clock.

The email said we are 100% shut down. Fines would start Saturday for being open. !*hp*!

3287 people die per day in auto accidents. 100 people die per day of gun violence. And yet were are in a total societal meltdown over CV.

Went to the grocery store this morning for supplies for a family member who has heart disease. Wal Mart has NO grocery stock - meat, lunch meats, pastas, canned goods, baking supplies, snacks - gone. i saw a guy carrying two packs of John Wayne brand toilet paper in his arms like a running back protecting a football. The other grocery I usually shop at still has some stuff, but has not restocked since I was there a week ago.

My family laughed at me way back in January, but it's a good thing I saw this coming and slowly planned ahead, buying an extra item or two when there was still plenty to be had instead of trying to grab it all at once.

Ob, and about the Flu - definitely more devastating than CV, and it's not just an American thing. Remember in the history books the Spanish Flu of 1918? Between 60 and 100 MILLION people died. I remember reading stories where folks would go out to visit relatives they hadn't heard from in a while and find the whole family dead. Then we have had. various other flu strains that have gone rouge over the years, but the hallmark is an immune system weakening sickness and then a secondary infection for the kill.

I don't know where you are at but I was out yesterday picking up a script for my bride and it looked like the panic buying had subsided a lot. The two grocery chains I passed on my mission were only about half full. Hope that is a good sign. If people would just get sort of normal this part of the problem would pass anyway. Being down here in hurricane land even though it's not the season we always have significant food and supplies in the house. Being all the restaurants and beaches are closed there is not much reason to go out. Our yard certainly is well groomed. !*roll-laugh*!

Buzz, I would have thought that the panic buying would be over. I mean unless people are reselling it, how much can a person's home hold? What I forsee next is a two-month downturn in grocery sales because nobody needs to buy any!

Yeah, all three of my vehicles have been washed up, and I've started an "exterior man cave" that I have been wanting to build. When I went to Home Depot Saturday, it was a madhouse, but not how you see at the grocery stores. People were buying paint, shrubs, stuff to spruce up a house or fence. I guess folks are figuring if they are going to be stuck at home, might as well make the best of it.

I think a lot of you here need to get your heads out of the sand and look at the reality of this. Italy's she will be right approach went from 5 cases to 40,000 in just 4 weeks and look where they are at now the whole country has been shut down. This virus spreads like wildfire a vaccination to stop you getting it is over one year away. Forget about your facts and figures from other flu outbreaks etc as this is a different kettle of fish.

Our country New Zealand is going into complete lockdown at midnight Wednesday NZDST. Only essential services are open, Chemist, Doctors and medical facilities, Petrol Stations and Super Markets and yes people are panic buying for some unknown reason as there is plenty of food around in the warehouses. People are to stay at home and not to mix with anyone else outside of the people living with you. You can go for a walk or run or walk the dog but do it by yourself. You can go out only to use anyone of the essential services but only the person wanting to use it to go. Like if the whole family use to go to the supermarket husband-wife and kids now only one person can go. There will more police and military presence doing spot checks when people are out and why they are out. No one has mentioned if there would be some sort of punishment for why they are out if it isn't warranted. Time will tell I suppose.

Yes, we are a small country with about 5 million people and have had just over 100 cases of the virus all but 2 were people who had just returned from overseas. Our prime minister has said that we don't want to end up like Italy so that is why the government has taken this hard stance hopefully early.

I don't know where you are but martial law is not a reasonable solution in the USA unless you want to violate the Constitution. This is not a political statement. This is a statement of law.

Well, allow me to trigger you a bit more. If the governments of the world stepped back and allowed this to run its course, as I am in favor of doing, 245-500 million people worldwide would die. That is still only 3-6% of the world population of 7 BILLION people, which by the way is an unsustainable number over the long term given climate change and available resources. I might be one of those statistics, but I'd take my chances with Covid than see this country go into martial law. And in the grand scheme of things, put this in your perspective pipe and smoke it - if Ebola ever mutated and became non-self limiting, there could be 4 billion deaths in a pandemic. I think our current situation is quite paltry in comparison.

Yes because of our government's closed doors policy not to let anyone into our small country. Actually up to 155 today so the tally is growing but what would it be like if our government had taken the Italian approach of doing nothing.

I'm trying to walk a fine line between information and provocation, so I'll say this then shut up for the day.

Italy population = 60.1 million
CV deaths as of today = 6077

Death rate, 1% IMHO, completely unacceptable to lock the whole country down for such a small percentage. I still say influenza is still a much larger danger than this virus, and media and government reaction completely out of proportion to it's actual lethality.

It will be interesting to see what is left of this country after another 3 weeks of forced closures. They are talking about half of all restaurants (mostly small family run businesses) in Iowa will close permanently as a result of these decisions. The ethanol plants are mostly shut down or shutting down. Corn prices are falling like a rock which is hurting our farmers and the associated ag industries. Unemployment claims are skyrocketing, hording is still continuing, and police calls for domestic disputes are on the rise. And finally there is the long term effect on our children by removing a month of the academic school year for K-12 with little to or no make up time. In the end, I suspect the long term health effects of stress on the population as the result of layoffs, bankruptcies, and foreclosures will take more lives than the virus would ever claim.
