Long been fascinated with these type of exposures - how do you calculate an exposure for this and any idea what it was for this pic?

Long been fascinated with these type of exposures - how do you calculate an exposure for this and any idea what it was for this pic?

I set the ISO to 100 and placed the shutter speed to "Time." Lighting is key to these type of photos, so experimenting with different lengths of time for your exposure is highly recommended. For this picture, I chose to capture the front headlights of the train along with the grade crossing lights. Where you see the bright starburst from the headlights is where I started the exposure. I finished the exposure once the gate arms where back up.

NS Train #29G through Suffolk, VA. It was busy on the Norfolk District this morning with #823, #29G, #V18, and #820 blowing through all in a short period of time.

NS Illinois Terminal Heritage Unit in Portsmouth, VA. It came in on NS #V14 and will leave shortly on #V07. Going to try and chase it on the CWRY. Might post my drone shot later as well.

Here is my drone shot of the Illinois Terminal Heritage Unit. I didn't want to stick around long, especially with my drone out there. I was right next to the port, and there were some workers working by the electric fence. When I saw one point, I thought I best get the crap out of there.

I know the engineer for the CWRY, and he said the same thing. I will not do that again.
