Major Components of Big Boy 4014 Back Together!

Grab a rock, have a seat, and talk about the real world of trains.

I do have some worries about the Big Boy. I'm gonna be pretty upset if something breaks on it. I want to see it operating and not limping along while being pushed by the diesel locomotives that are surely gonna be attached to the train in the event of a failure. Yes I'm sure they have a lot of experience on keeping a steam locomotive operating due to the years of running the #844. But the Big Boy is a whole different level of beast that only a handful of people still alive had any experience in running and maintaining. Steam locomotives are notorious for high maintenance.

I'm not sure how much break-in is needed, but I imagine this locomotive will never be truly put to the test. Especially on this particular run. It will always have a relatively light load behind it for the rest of it's existence and not run too particularly hard. I understand the reasoning behind it, but it would sure be nice to see it struggle at least once.

I've got just over a month to survey the route with Google maps and Streetview to find the ideal scenic spots to video it from for my channel. Of course I imagine there is gonna be a caravan of railfans of a level not ever seen before. I hope it's relatively orderly. Cuz I predict a certain level of frenzy and organized chaos when this train is followed. I figure the scene when it's in Ogden is gonna be crazy and crowded. The hotels and motels for miles around are selling quick I was told and the prices keep raising for those that are left.

I'm personally gonna camp in the back of my SUV like I did on my railfaning trips last year to save money on hotels and for it's more flexible logistical reasons. I just got a new Goal Zero Yeti 3000 Lithium Solar Generator a couple months ago to upgrade from my prior Yeti 1400. It's the biggest they sell at over twice the capacity as I had before and I also now have 650-watts in solar panels to keep it charged up even in the cloudiest of overcast conditions. It powers both a thermoelectric refrigerator and an electric blanket off it's 12-volt power port. I power and charge my laptop and video camera off it's 1500-watt inverter and also a small microwave oven. I also have a hanging LED light to see at night and a solar shower to bathe and keep myself squeaky clean. I jokingly call it the foamer-mobile when I have it all loaded up with this stuff for these trips. *!greengrin!*

I do plan on meeting up with a few railfans I know that are flying in and renting rooms and cars. So I won't be there all alone with no one to talk to. I'm pretty excited and pumped up for this trip! !*cheers*!

Yeah most regular folks have never heard of the term. It's basically a coil device that when electrical current is sent into it, heat is drawn from one side to the other. That makes one side cool and the other hot. Reverse it and the cool side now becomes hot. I call it my refrigerator, but it's actually a cooler in reality. It cools 36°F below ambient temperature. That means ideally the air around the cooler must be 71°F or lower if you want it to safely store perishable food. Any higher than that and it's only good for cooling beer or soda down. Reverse the switch and it becomes a 140°F hot box perfect for storing hot tamales for sale on a street corner. It draws 35-watts, so my Yeti 3000 would run it for roughly 87 hours straight before the battery is completely drained. That same battery would run my GTX 1080 gaming laptop for about 50 hours while surfing the internet... or .... about 10 hours if I were gaming at ultra graphics settings. !!*ok*!!

Here is the 12-volt thermoelectric cooler I own. I highly recommend it.....

I'm really impressed at how quickly they managed to get the restoration done. They must have thrown quite a bit of money at it. If it were anybody other than UP I'd be worried that corners were cut somewhere, but there's no way UP would take those kinds of risks.

Well I believe the FRA has it so that corners really can’t be cut. I would assume steamers are probably inspected by the FRA before mainline use. But then again, what do I know

Well I get on Trainorders and they say the fireman/2nd engineer Ted Schulte was in a bad car accident last week and was transported to a local hospital with serious back injuries.

https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/ ... 10,4756648

If he ends up well enough somehow in a month, maybe UP will let him ride along so he doesn’t miss it. But I kind of doubt it. He certainly isn’t gonna be working while on it that’s for sure. Liability wouldn’t allow it.

They do have a month to train another guy for the job. I’m sure they already had backups trained for these unexpected situations. This UP 150th is too big of an event to not have backup plans. Sucks for this guy that not only is he seriously hurt, he’s missing out on a once in a lifetime event. *!sad!*

I seem to recall there being some serious safety issues with K4 1361 due to sloppy work, but that was back in the 80s so it wouldn't surprise me if the FRA has tightened things up since then.

The video isn't removed, but they may have it blocked so that those not registered with the Steam Club can't see it.

I'll leave the link here, because some people here on the forum are Steam Club Members and will be able to see it.

If that doesn't work, try my FB page

That got shot down faster than UMG claiming some music in a video.

The Steam Crew is putting on the valve gear and boiler lagging.
Ed Dickens sounded really sick in the last video.
