i was stopped at a crossing early last week and a coal train had stopped. it had 2 power in front and 2 power in back. it stopped a total of 5 times but on the 5 time the rear powere had pushed so hard (i guess) that the train actually jumped?? is that safe for them to do???

I'll second that... What do mean by jumped?

I've heard of helpers back in the day pushing a train from the back so hard that the car or two in front of them have derailed. Usually because it was done manually (not remote control) and because there was miscommunication with the engineer at the front of the train. It was for this very reason that the workers in the caboose by law were not allowed to be in it if helpers were pushing it from behind. They would have to ride in one of the cabs of the helpers until the helpers were disengaged at the end of their job.

In fact.... helpers have not only been known to derail the cars in front due to misapplication of power, they've been known to crush and even split the last car in half! !*hp*!

like the back pushers pushed so hard some of the railcars were coming off the tracks and slowly drifted back down.

So the cars went airborne.....and....settled back down onto the bolsters......while in motion, without damaging the rigging?
