Interesting. I wonder, if this technology takes off it will help living museums or be too cost prohibitive to use.

Color me very skeptical. I know I had physics a long time ago but creating energy out of nothing seems to violate several rules of nature.

Interesting. If this works and doesn't cost much, then museums won't have to shell out big bucks to convert a coal burner to oil and use re-cycled oil. Like the Grand Canyon Railway does. Their steam locomotive runs on re-cycled restaurant oil. I imagine it smells like french fries. *!lol!*

They are not using 'nothing', it is just a different 'something'. *!!wink!!*

Most of the different somethings take more energy to create than what they give back. There is always some efficiency loss in the 'creation' unlike using fossil fuels where the energy is already there just bound up.

Interesting article. But "Ghostery" did not like that website. Now I need to run Malwarebytes and CCleaner. Just to be sure.

Wow, Ghostery is nice. Thanks for the hint.

For me its picking up all the advertising and market tracking. How do you know if it found something malicious?

Good idea maybe for tourist roads, but in the article they make it sound like steam is the future for major railroads...

Ghostery really doesn't pick up any virus or malware, but it finds all those darn trackers and advertising. That's why, if Ghostery finds a bunch of crap on a website, I run Malwarebytes and CCleaner afterwards. Avast! will catch any virus or Trojans.

Now that we are completely off topic, weren't the "Cab Forwards" oil burners? To try and reduce smoke in tunnels? I know (but can't remember which ones) some vintage steam locomotives have already been converted to propane/ natural gas.

The cab forwards were oil burners (in fact all SP steam locomotives were) since it's cheaper to burn 'bunker oil' then to ship coal in. Not a lot of coal in California..

LOCO TUNNEL SMOKE.jpg

Smokin pretty good for a oil burner.

From wiki:Since the firebox on these locomotive was located in the front (far from the tender), they were designed to burn oil. Oil was piped from the tender along the locomotive to the firebox. The oil bunker in the tender on these locomotives was made air-tight and was structurally braced. They were slightly pressurized with air from the main air reservoir to insure a constant oil flow to the burner in the fire box when to the locomotive when traveling upgrade.

I dunno how good an idea this is, but if it gets another steam locomotive restored to operation I'm all for it!
