Has anyone ever seen tracks like this? Let alone a train driving on it!? It's amazing the dang thing didn't derail!

Short line like that might just barely make enough money for payroll and diesel fuel, let alone track maintenance (obviously) !*don-know!*

Wow sounds like Penncentral was in pretty bad shape for a while.

I don't understand what would bend the rails like that though....seems like someone would have to be beating on them with a jackhammer to look like that.

Those rails and ties on the Maumee and Western is more then likely the originals that carried Wabash trains as that railroads double track mainline in the 1950's.

Also, if you want to know why Penn Central failed as badly as it did, I recommend reading the book "Wreck of the Penn Central" by Joseph R. Daughen & Peter Binzen.

""The Wreck of the Penn Central" provides a close-up view of the events that brought the Big Train to bankruptcy court--over-regulation, subsidized competition, big labor featherbedding, greed, corporate back-stabbing, stunning incompetence, and, yes, even a little sex."

I live aboit 15 miles from this line, US 24 parallels this line all the way, southwest of Defiance is mainly used for storage annd they put a lot of autoracks and boxcars on the line and a lot of them ended up sinking into the ground and derailing.
