My trip to the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society

Yesterday my brother in law and I braved the rather harsh Los Angeles heat (104 degrees at least) to visit the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society and see their impressive collection. Here's a list of everything we got to see:

My brother in law handled taking the pictures and I'll post some as soon as he sends them to me.

Without a doubt the most memorable part of the trip was seeing Big Boy #4014 in person. No amount of pictures can ever convey the sheer size of this locomotive. It's something you have to see for yourself. I stand at about 6 foot 4 and the drive wheels are almost up to my eye height! The firebox is about as big as your average size living room. It really is a masterpiece of engineering and everyone who worked to build and operate these beasts has my admiration. Oh yeah, I also got to blow #4014's whistle!

The other thing that had me really excited was seeing a DD40X in person and boy it didn't disappoint at all. The most powerful diesel ever built certainly looks the part with it's twin diesel motors and 4 drive wheels per truck. The best part was I got to sit in the engineer's seat and play around with the controls. Yeah, I also got to blow the horn on this one.

The other locomotives were also absolutely wonderful to look at. The drive wheels ATSF #3450 are actually taller than me and UP #9000 has automatic cab signalling installed and I got to see it up close!

They were also giving out free, authentic copies of Santa Fe, Union Pacific and Southern Pacific timetables. Naturally I had to get one of each that they had:





There's plenty more where that came from. If anyone would like to see the rest I can scan them. I'm sure some of you might find the information quite useful.

Is this the museum out in Pomona at the Fairplex? I thought it was only open last Saturday of the month? Been wanting to go out there. Work just gets in the way.

During the LA County Fair, they're open pretty much everyday. You can check the website to see their times:

Definitely try to make some time to go down there before the fair ends.
