UP Hybrid SD40-2 slug set switchers.

April 29, 2024 UP has added a hybrid set of switchers to it's fleet. It consists of a diesel powered lead unit and a battery powered slug using ZTR BLU technology . According to estimates it should save about 80% in fuel usage. The slug is a plug-in rechargeable or can be recharged during use. UP plans on purchasing a total of six of these cow calf hybrid units. In it's commitment to reducing total carbon footprint and reducing pollutants it will also purchase from Progress Rail and Wabtec an additional 20 more battery-electric switchers.
