Dressing up a steamer

Dressing up a steamer

I remember asking one of the shop guys this and the answer I got was essentially that it was a fad not in style anymore.

What happened to making what is left of our live steam engines here in the U.S. look stylish? All are just black, black, black, black, and more black.

A little design around the number, some nice outlining of the tender, paint on the wheels and cylinder housing goes a long way. I always thought they looked sharper this way.

Does any existing railroad in the U.S. do this anymore? I miss it

Seems everyone here is painting everything they can get their hands on in 50s-60s British Rail livery, no matter when it was built ( which is mostly black, or occasionally green ). Terribly dull, and I have no idea why. I guess eventually it'll go full circle.

But that's how a steam locomotive is supposed to look. !**duh*!!

Union Pacific recently stylized #844 before it's "Little Rock Express" excursion with white wall wheels and new paint: http://www.railpictures.net/images/d1/4 ... 312993.jpg
This is the only locomotive that shouldn't be painted black: http://www.railpictures.net/images/d1/0 ... 985938.jpg
But then again she looks dern good in it as well: http://www.railpictures.net/images/d1/6 ... 242400.jpg

The Southern Railway green and gold passenger steamers were some of the most beautiful ever made!

We're gonna see one run again (unless the TVRM paints it into the black freight scheme) *!greengrin!*

"Southern Railway 4501: Built in 1911 by Baldwin Locomotive Works, 4501 served Southern Railway in freight service in Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, and Indiana, before being sold to a short line railroad. No. 4501 was retired from revenue service in 1963 and enjoyed a second career in the excursion program operated by Southern Railway and Norfolk Southern from 1966 until 1994. This Ms (Mikado superheated) Class locomotive has 63-inch driving wheels. " - http://www.nscorp.com/nscportal/nscorp/ ... again.html

The CNW "400" streamlined locomotives were nicely dressed up along with MILW's:

884 is a beautiful girl in black with white side walls. Amazing, all the rail fans stopping to watch her go by. Steam locomotives are black, maybe a silver front section. Except the Daylight. Se was a true beauty. Wish we had more streamlined steam loco's in RW. **!!bow!!**
