Happy Birthday EMD.
This year is the 100th anniversary of the beginnings of EMD. In 1922, originally called the Electro-Motive Engineering Corporation, it started manufacturing gas-electric self-propelled railcars or commonly called doodlebugs using General Electrics’ electrical components and Winton engines. The name was later changed to Electro-Motive Company. In 1930 General Motors purchased EMC and renamed it to Electro-Motive Corporation and also procured The Winton Engine Company.
The Burlington Zephyrs and M-1000 streamliners appeared in 1933 using EMC power systems. Pullman Standard and Budd also purchased power train components. From 1935 to 1939 EMC built the SC,SW,NC, NW, NC1, NC2, NW1, and NW1A series switchers. 1937 brought the EMC E1 streamlined units to the industry.
In 1941 the company changed the name again to the now familiar Electro-Motive Division (EMD). In 1941 ATSF purchased the first FT units. Soon to follow were the F7s, E7s, F3s and the GP7s the early workhorses in the transition from steam to diesel.
Greenbriar Equity group and Berkshire Partners bought Electro-Motive Division and changed the name to Electro-Motive Diesel. Progress Rail purchased the company in 2010.
Just an old Alaska guy trying to live in an insane world. Degree in life, Masters in common sense.
