Happy Easter to all. Even though we are physically separated, I'm so proud of the ways we've found to visit virtually. My family and I played a "Rook" tournament last night that extended from Nashville, TN, to Florence, SC, and included eight families (via Zoom). It was a great experience. Even though our grand-boys couldn't be here to hunt Easter eggs, we sent them gift certificates for treats. My point is we find ways to make the best of a bad situation. That's who we are!

It's been unseasonably cold, but the canvas guys showed up today. They're about a month early, but these are extraordinary times. Years back, we had them cobble up an awning over pipe railings, sized to cover about half our back deck. This was a natural for me, having grown up with the WWII Navy, the fantail of every ship of which was similarly equipped. It will be a particular treat this year, because I'm now mobile enough to enjoy it at will, which I haven't been for a couple of years.

My community continues to amaze me with the way they have been getting out in front of this. Hes, we've suffered illnesses, and a few losses, and a couple of them have hit close to home; but for the most part, this hasn't dimmed our spirits, no matter how frightening the situation is said to be. I am blessed to live among them.

In the meantime, I found out that one of the local piggyback stations was broadcasting Mystery Science Theater 3000 in marathon format. I watched it for a few hours, enjoying the laugh and appreciating that, at least at that point, it was the closest thing to consistent intellectual honesty on the tube.

There was morning and evening, and the numbers are consistently getting better. There is much to be thankful for.

New Zealand has been COVID 19 free for nearly 3 weeks. Some people are saying overseas are saying that is because we are a small country. In this article, there is an overlay map of New Zealand over Europe and in landmass, NZ would be bigger than most of them. Also, there is a chart comparing Colorado with NZ which has a similar land mass and population to NZ showing the number of virus infections. Keep your comments nice please if you make any. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/arti ... dguaxnpV90

I think the key word here is "island" rather than "small". (Actually it is a group of islands, rather than just one island.)

Apart from China, all other countries have had COVID-19 spread by people arriving from elsewhere. New Zealand has been very fortunate in that it was relatively easy to "close the borders" and isolate or quarantine anyone that was allowed into the country. The other positive factor was that the government moved quickly to restrict movement and contact and most people were willing to abide by the rules. (There were, of course, the usual bunch of idiots who thought they knew better.)

Figures never lie liars figure. Statistics are a slippery thing. We have a uptick of cases here in SW Florida. The State is now being flooded by people from NY NJ IL who are supposed to self quarantine for fourteen days but my neighbor who is a restaurant manager says they are invading the upscale place where she works. People just defy common sense and then wonder why we don't have a handle on this.

We have just had two new cases. Two women let into the country from the UK for a funeral. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/arti ... wRW6jEXQ-c

To just be quite blunt about it, I dont think many people here give a schit anymore. Restaurants are full, parks are full, highways are full, grocers are busy. Numbers are still going up, but everyone is "meh" about it. Given the events of the last couple of weeks, I think the Plague is the least of our worries here in the Rebel Colonies right now.
