Wide nose and cowling

So this isn't a train sim related question but i've been wondering about this.

So what are the benefits of a wide nose and cowling? Take the GP40 based passenger locomotives. You have some like the GP40FH-2 that have cowling but a standard nose. Then you have the GP40WH-2 with a wide nose and no cowling.

The cowling is to match the passenger equipment that would be running behind it, where as the wide nose is a safety feature.

Also the cowling protects the crew in bad weather, at the expense of backwards visibility, which is not so important in passenger service.
