My question is this: What is the overall benefit from this? Bottom line is money I'm sure, but that aside, what is driving this? Do humps produce more wear on the cars that travel over them? If the cars speed isn't regulated closely enough and it joins another car, can that damage the couplers? Do the hump retarders damage or wear the wheels more? What are the maintenance costs for up keeping the retarders? But I can't imagine leveling a hump will be cheap either, it that is what the plan is.

I believe he wrote a book on "Precision Railroading" which is his concept of getting stuff from A to B faster and therefore at a lower cost.
