introduction of tier 4 standards

Since the EPA decided that they're going to implement tier 4 standards !*not-ok*! What will happen to the current locomotives that are operational? And what about the CSX SD40-3 rebuild? Will the engines used now be the CAT 1010? or will they still use the tried and true 645E3?

Most of the existing locomotives on the class ones are exempt until rebuild. There are a zillion exceptions for others and short lines.

So, for instance, CSX 8888 is headed to Boise, Idaho for an overhaul. So, could it be assumed that after it's conversion to an SD40-3, that it will not have the 710?

I believe tier 4 only applies to locomotives built after January 1, 2015 rebuilds have a different set of emissions standards to meet at least with my understanding.

The SD40-3's retain their 645's. They have never received 710's.

That's what I had read somewhere. I thought the rebuilds on the older engines only needed to reach tier 2.
I think they had already meet that requirement years ago with the electronic fuel injection improvements. IE new injectors and injector control packages.
It's also why a lot of those rebuilds get much better fuel economy than the original engines.
New build. i7-7700k, MSI Z270 Gaming M5 Mobo, Hyper 212 Evo, Corsair DDR4 3200 Mhz RAM, Klipsch Pro Mediea 2.1 Speakers, Samsung 850 Evo SSD, HAF XM Case, Asus Strix GTX 1070 and Cooler Master Storm XT Keyboard.
