GE ET44AC

So last night I did some reading up on GE's newest locomotive model. The ET4400 is almost like the ES4400. Almost. The major differences are that the frame is 16 inches longer. The Radiator is bigger, and similar to the AC6000CW. And instead of having one fan, it now has 2. Incorporated into the locomotive is an exhaust treatment system. that adds to the height of the locomotive by a few inches. resulting a a boxy 'hump'. also, as a result of the new exhaust system, the horn has been moved forward slightly. so that now, it's now just behind the cab itself. But the main production units differ significantly from the demonstration units. In the fact that the hump was longer and was outright ugly. and the demonstration unit also has 2 horns on it. a 2 chime horn in the back, and a 3 chime horn for the front.

It's not a 4400. He had the title right.

The ET44s also use a compounded turbocharging system. Laymans terms, small turbo before big turbo.

Similar to the Toyota Supra and used to negate the effects of lag. EMD dealt with this issue with a mechanically driven turbo in the lower RPM range... making it effectively a supercharger on the low end.

This new loco will take some getting used to in the looks department. I'm glad they are still keeping things boxy. A freight loco with a streamlined passenger service body would look ugly and odd to me. Just like cars.....I like'm boxy when I work... and curved when I play. There's a decent amount of videos now of this loco model out on the road.
EMD 2-strokes rule! My all time favorite: SD45X also love the SD40-2/SD40T-2/SD45-2/SD45T-2/DD35A/DDA40X/SD70ACe/SD80ACe

Now with EMD coming out with the updated Tier 4 compliant SD70ACe, the CAT 1010 (pretty much the EMD 265H, but upgraded and improved) also has the compound turbo as well. And with 4600 horses, that'll give GE a run for their money

I have to admit, it looks like a GE C44-9W (CN) and an EMD SD70ACe had a baby. Image

It does look that way. But at least, CAT is keeping EMD from going down completely. This will completely level the playing field, now that GE and EMD are using 4 stroke diesels.

Well, after it proves it's reliability perhaps. I'm sure there will be a lot of demonstration time needed to build some confidence in this model before railroads start placing sizeable orders.

I'm sure that CAT will prove it's reliability. After all, they make some very reliable engines. Pair that up with an AR-10 alternator and in my opinion, you'll have a fine EMD (CAT) product
