It's probably a forced perspective shot. I'm sure the photographer wasn't on the line. They were probably on the outside of a curve looking up the track.
I'm sure with a gap jump that large, the whole thing was done by a professional rider. They may even have done it with CN's permission.
I'm not saying it isn't dangerous, but it's no worse than professional anyone else getting killed.
Race car drivers.
Cops.
Firefighters.
Moto X riders.
Pilots.
etc etc.

The rider is purported to be Dustin Gilding. Though not conclusive, I'd say judging by some of his other work the photo is probably genuine. Bruce Piwek is noted for photo-documenting this type of thing.

I just did a close up examination down to the pixel level, it's not photo shopped.
I didn't think it was, that kind of thing in the pro mountain biking world isn't that uncommon anymore.
That's not exactly a big jump nowadays. If you want to see really big hucking, just watch them jump down cliffs during the Red Bull Rampage.
