North Dakota BNSF train derailment. Wow!

Grab a rock, have a seat, and talk about the real world of trains.

We as in North America are using less oil certainly per capital and will continue in that direction. Hopefully we will not stop the world for the snail darter as we progress in that direction.

I wonder if the railroads have done a cost analysis of paying lawyers and court costs to fight changes like CTC and stronger tanker cars for a decade and then having to implement those changes anyways versus just (gradually) implementing those changes. Chances are they aren't looking at the long term cost benefits and only the short term ones.

Are the Railroads really fighting new tank cars? They are made by third parties like GATX and ARI, and all they need to do is meet or exceed DOT standards.

Doesn't sound like the railroads are "fighting this". After all there are only 335,000 tank cars in the system. Just snap your fingers and the problem is solved.

01/02/2014 - The Gubment has issued an advisory stating that Bakken crude oil may be more flammable than other types of crude.

And in other news, water is wet, cats shed year-round, and Miley Cyrus has a tongue.

LMFAO All that says to me is that the oil has more combustible potential inside of an engine as well.

And it only took two major explosions to come to that conclusion! Now what might they do about it before the next explosion(s) ... hopefully something before more death and destruction.

Two thoughts - idler cars between loaded crude tankers or refrigerating the crude during transport might help.

Oh please. Any other kind of oil train will explode too if it is involved in a derailment. That was the point of Jerry's joke. C'mon Buzzkillington.
The explosions in Casselton weren't that severe. It wasn't in a city center, it was 12 cars out of 100+ that burned out, and no one was hurt.
