How many of you have seen one of these in action before?

Considering their headquarters is over in Hamel, not too far from me, quite often. While they're grinding though is rare for me.

That's quite a contraption.
I like the two guys on the back porch with the water guns.
The temptation of misusing those things must be overwhelming.

A lot!! Cars and premises nearby usually are covered in dust that rusts away in subsequent rainfall making for nasty stains. Do motorist find free carwash tickets under their wipers when they have parked trackside?

Afterwards, the railhead is often visible grooved in a circular pattern.

You'd better watch a rail grinder in action at night. Lots of sparks flying when the shrouds are up.
Noise and stench also make a marking impression. Carborundum dust isn't good for your health, so usually lots of water mist is sprayed to bind it.

That was fascinating. I noted they have a weather station anemometer to keep track of wind on the caboose.
My mother watched this with me and said you can almost smell the burning metal. *!greengrin!*

Quite a sight and quite a video, but that engineer is going to fail the scenario due to excessive horn use.

Excessive? There's 5 crossings where I film in a one mile stretch.

Here's what the rail head looks like after a day.
