And how many cars and trucks each year have crashes. How many miles each year do the trains travel without any problems. The only reason the press make a big deal out of train crashes is because they are quite rare and when they happen they tend to be quite big crashes. It may be unfair to pick on CSX as there are railways in other countries who are a lot worse than CSX could ever be. And I'm sure CSX like all other railroads in the US try to be as safe as they can.

To be fair, all the railroads have had their share of costly (and sometimes fatal) wrecks over the past few years. In the grand scheme of things, sh*t happens pretty rarely vs. the highway, where accidents involving serious injury or death happen daily.

Yeah, look at airplanes. A small plane crashes and two people dia and it's almost national headlines. A car crash like that barely gets on the local news.

Is there any concrete data that CSX is really any worse than the other Class I railroads?

Do you base it on how much tonnage is lost as a percent of total yearly tonnage moved? How many trains have had accidents out of how many total trains run in a year? How many accidents for so many miles run in a year? How much total money did they lose.... or losses as a percentage of total revenue?

Not sure how they calculate it. Whatever method is the standard used, it would be interesting to see the standings amongst the Class I railroads.

Afaik, CSX pays least amount of money to hire employees, CN pays most.

Well, the derailment made for some very interesting railfanning today. 2 trains from 3 - 8:30., and After it got dark, Selkirk was literally sending out trains 2 and 3 signal blocks apart.
