Question about E and F double headlights

For a bit of light entertainment I am working on the coding for the lower headlight on my E7 units. In most of the pictures I have found it appears that the lower one is used as the main beam and the upper one appears to house a double light either set horizontally or vertically.

1) When double headlights are fitted what are the upper set used for?
2) Is it worth doing a set of horizontal and a set of vertical upper lights?
3) I remember from my MSTS days that there was a red light when the brakes were set to emergency. On a double headlight E or F unit would that also be in the upper headlight housing?

Please enlighten me. !*YAAA*!

Usually, if the upper light was a double vertical lens, (edit for clarity: and there was a lower light,) it was an oscillating light that swept from side to side. There were single lamp oscillators as well.

Horizontal twins were used as second head light.

Red was usually displayed if the loco was in reverse, to act as an end of train warning. Some railroads (the RI/SP Golden State) had an oscillating red single in the upper that ran all the time, forward or reverse.

Yes, please do the twins... some roads used dual lamps in the lower, and later singles were 6" sealed beams.

And not to make your life difficult... but I know some people would just hug you to near death if you could create punchouts for ditchlights:

But that is not an E7. Is it? !*don-know!*

Did both of the lenses oscillate?

In that case, since there is no lower light, the lights act as headlights.(possibly a low/high setup)

Sorry I didn't put that very well. In a double headlight set up did both of the upper lenses oscillate?

If they were oscillators, they were paired and both oscillated.

Just a few variations. Note the snow effects and oscillating upper light (3rd picture)

If you were to make ditch lights, I've seen several preserved F-units with this style of lights:

This would probably be a fairly simple child object.

They already exist. PapaXpress did them for the UPY588 GP15. They are children, and can be used anywhere.

@Dick - Wow, just wow!

I will update the corrected pack later this evening. I already put the files on the net BUT there is a mistake in the engine LUA file. !!**sorry**!! !*whack*! If you want a head start upload the new Basic pack then edit all the "E7_headlights" entries in the LUA file to "headlights". As I said I will correct it later. I have got a meeting to go to first!!! *!embar*!

Dick.
