Sounds like a plan, Bob. When do you think (roughly) the subscription payments would have to start? It makes me sad because I've already heard some people outraged over the idea of a subscription, and we'll likely lose their patronage, but I think it's a good idea. I'll simply have to wait till after Christmas to buy my first year.

Bob, as I had posted in another thread, I already have my money that I stole (I mean borrowed indefinitely) out of the wife's purse and trust me, that's a scary place to go putting one's hand in, and I have no issue what so ever in supporting this site. Do you have a way of tracking donations as I could send the money immediately, or would you prefer we all wait until you have the correct tracking software in place.

I don't need any money right now and I also have a reserve of my own and Buzz has my back. I have to find or write or pay someone to write some software to do this quota thing. Could take several months or I could find something sooner. But it won't happen until next year. The funds are not an emergency at this time. Hopefully they never will be.

I have all donations emails in a separate folder on my home system. Paypal sends me an invoice for each one. There is no hurry to donate at this time. I am more concerned about the "move" that is happening in the background right now. I have to learn abut a "Dedicated Server" now also. Fortunately I have Frank (whackyhuman) to help me.

I had to turn it off because it used too many resources. It will be back on the new server. I liked it a lot myself. I will be turning on the friendly URL translations also when the move is complete.

The plan sounds excellent, Bob. Thanks for the thorough and clear explanation. I can't understand the complaint that "downloads would be under subscription" when downloads will still be free. The line in the sand is on the user's side in deciding how MUCH they want to download at one time. I can't see that affecting the popularity of any products in the RWA library; just the rate at which download stats accumulate. Requiring a free login account to download free stuff is the norm on today's Internet.

Bob, this is a good move and still a very generous offer for members, much better than what I first thought.
I believe this will help in filtering out those who only download the whole library even though they can't possibly use it all.

This is a great plan, Bob. Even after you get a quota/ subscription thing going, I still think a "Donate" button is also a good idea, like I suggested in my PM several days ago.

I don't see a problem with a $10 dollar subscription, I won't have a problem at all paying $10 a year, it's easy for me to come up with.

Also, I'll continue to post my items here, this year when I buy a new computer I hope to start building some locomotives for the site finally, since a new computer will be able to handle it better.

Also, if it's possible to actually sell scenery in Railworks I want to build a pack of donationware buildings for the site if that would help.

I'm just wondering if one of those shopping cart programs (cs cart or "x-cart Gold" just to name two) might be able to handle the subscription info? Another suggestion Digital River? Also $10 a year for a subscription sounds great
