Removing parts of buildings?

Is there a way to remove features from a building? In the image below, I'd like to remove the railings that cut through where I could bring track in to the blast furnace.

I have never tried this but it might work. Paint the railing black and then make the alpha for the railing dead black. It often makes things invisible.

Is the procedure for re-skinning a building basically the same as for rolling stock?

Just bury the building 3 feet under the ground.

I tried that, then the ceiling is too low and the car is going through it.

Tried using the scale option? I would do/try that to make it work. See attached pic that is circled in red.
